Passport Stamps Still Matter Until 6 October 2026: A Carrier Checklist

eu-LISA still requires carriers to verify passport stamps until 6 October 2026 (included). A short ops checklist for airlines and OTAs, before the stamp check ends.

On 1 October 2026, the eu-LISA passport-stamp verification window for carriers has about five calendar days left. That date is on eu-LISA's own Carriers page: with the introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES), carriers must, among other obligations, continue to verify the passport stamps until 6 October 2026.

This note is for airline compliance, OCC, and station leads, and for OTA product teams that still treat "EES is live" as "stamps are irrelevant." It complements eu-LISA Carrier Interface and EES pre-departure checks. It covers the stamp deadline only.

This article is for operational planning. It is not legal advice.

Milestone Date Status
EES entered into operation; progressive border rollout 12 Oct 2025 Confirmed
Carrier Interface mandatory 10 Apr 2026 Confirmed
Passport stamp verification still required until 6 Oct 2026 Confirmed
Stamp check no longer mandatory, per Carrier WG summary 7 Oct 2026 Confirmed

What eu-LISA says about the stamp deadline

Per the eu-LISA Carriers page, verified on 1 October 2026, carriers will need to:

Register with eu-LISA.
Use the Carrier Interface to verify whether non-EU nationals requiring visas have already used the number of entries authorised by their visa before boarding.
Continue to verify the passport stamps until 6 October 2026.

The same page states that Carrier Interface use was optional between 9 January 2026 and 9 April 2026, and mandatory as of 10 April 2026. eu-LISA Carrier Working Group executive summaries describe the stamp window in the same terms: from 12 October 2025 until 6 October 2026 (included), carriers keep verifying stamps in travel documents; as of 7 October 2026, checking stamps is no longer required. Member States continued stamping during the progressive start of EES. Those summaries are linked in Sources.

If a station playbook already dropped stamp checks because "EES replaced stamping," put the eu-LISA cut-off back in before 6 October 2026. A single-entry case can still turn on the stamp trail during this transitional window.

Why stamps sit beside the Carrier Interface

The Carrier Interface answers a specific question about single- and double-entry short-stay visas: whether the authorised entries appear consumed. eu-LISA is explicit that the interface reply does not verify authorised remaining days of stay. Stamp verification during the progressive EES period is a parallel carrier obligation on the Carriers page, not a second copy of the web-service call.

Check What it addresses Still relevant until
Carrier Interface query Whether entries authorised on a single- or double-entry visa appear still available Ongoing. Mandatory Carrier Interface use as of 10 April 2026
Passport stamp verification Transitional stamp check while EES progressive operations continue 6 October 2026 included
Future ETIAS status query Visa-exempt travel authorisation, once ETIAS is live Not applicable yet. ETIAS is not in operation

Keep these as separate flags in the DCS and in any OTA rules engine. Official ETIAS information remains on travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Channel detail for the Carrier Interface itself stays in the Carrier Interface note.

Five-day checklist for stations and OCC

Use this as an internal audit list. It is not a compliance certificate.

Policy and briefings

Station and ground-handler briefings still list stamp verification as required through 6 October 2026 inclusive.
OCC and irregular-ops scripts name the eu-LISA cut-off. They do not tell agents that a live EES means stamps are already obsolete.
Codeshare and wet-lease partners know which operating carrier owns the stamp check this week.

Who to check

Front-line focus stays on third-country nationals where stamp verification still applies under the airline's ops policy, aligned with eu-LISA guidance.
Single- and double-entry visa holders stay high-attention: Carrier Interface and stamps, both, during the window.
Ireland and Cyprus itineraries need care. eu-LISA's EES country list does not cover every European destination the same way. Do not invent a local stamp rule here. Escalate to compliance counsel and to your Timatic-class source of truth.

What OTAs should do this week

OTAs do not run eu-LISA stamp checks at the gate. They do create, or avoid, last-minute surprises.

01

Retire consumer copy that treats "no more passport stamps in Europe" as a universal, immediate fact for every itinerary and every carrier obligation.

02

Keep visa type and number of entries in post-booking capture where a Schengen short-stay visa applies. Stamps or not, the Carrier Interface still cares about entry count. See the Carrier Interface note.

03

Point travelers at official EES and ETIAS pages when they need the landscape, and do not sell ETIAS applications. The companion pillar is EES live, ETIAS next.

Denied-boarding exposure from document problems is covered in How airlines reduce denied boarding with visa data.

After 6 October 2026

Have a dated SOP ready for 7 October 2026: stamp checks no longer required, per the Carrier Working Group summaries cited below. Carrier Interface obligations continue.
Version the training material so agents do not keep obsolete stamp steps for months after the cut-off.

We will update this note if eu-LISA moves the cut-off, or if the Carriers page changes the stamp sentence.

If you need a same-week alignment between station stamp SOPs, Carrier Interface coverage, and OTA visa-data capture before the 6 October 2026 cut-off, book a demo. SimpleVisa can sit with airline compliance and OTA product on one readiness thread, and keep stamp checks, Carrier Interface queries, and future ETIAS as separate flags.

Watch the Schengen area

Coverage alerts send one email per rule change for the destinations you pick, from the partner console. Systems can take the same events as webhooks; the shape is in the developer docs. The live requirement for any passport is always in the requirements checker.

This article summarises publicly available eu-LISA carrier guidance for operational planning. It is not legal advice, not an official eu-LISA onboarding manual, and not a substitute for your carrier's obligations under EU law or advice from your compliance counsel. Confirm the cut-off date and passenger-scope rules with eu-LISA and your competent authorities before changing SOPs.
