Tajikistan and Iran Now Allow 30 Days Visa-Free Through All International Crossings, From 5 October 2026

Since 5 October 2026, Tajik and Iranian ordinary-passport holders can enter, transit and stay up to 30 days in 90 without a visa, by air, land or via third countries. What airlines and OTAs should update.

Tajikistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the visa-free regime with Iran is now fully implemented. From 5 October 2026, citizens of both countries holding ordinary passports can enter, transit and stay in the other country without a visa for up to 30 days within any 90-day period (statement reported by the state news agency Khovar and by The Times of Central Asia, 7 Oct 2026).

What changed

The two countries signed a memorandum in 2023 and introduced the policy in stages. In early 2025, Tajikistan said the exemption applied only to direct air travel between the two countries. Travelers routing through third countries or crossing by land still needed a visa. The ministry now says the regime applies at international border crossings, including land crossings, international airports and air routes from third countries.

Point Before (early 2025) From 5 Oct 2026
Direct flights Visa-free Visa-free
Air via third countries Visa required Visa-free
Land crossings Visa required Visa-free
Stay Not stated in that earlier limit 30 days in any 90
Passports Not stated in that earlier limit Ordinary passports

What airlines should do

Update document rules for Tajik nationals to Iran and Iranian nationals to Tajikistan on connecting itineraries (for example via Istanbul, Dubai or Central Asian hubs), not just direct services.
Keep transit-country rules separate. The two countries share no land border. Overland trips cross Afghanistan, or Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which keep their own visa rules.

What OTAs should do

Remove the visa prompt for these nationalities on stays up to 30 days, and add a stay-length warning for longer trips.
